The ACZM is soliciting nominations for the ACZM Murray E. Fowler Lifetime Achievement Award.  This award will recognize an ACZM Diplomate that has demonstrated exceptional commitment and contributions to the ACZM while making significant lifetime contributions that have advanced the discipline of zoological medicine.  This award was created in honor of Dr. Murray Fowler, who was also the award's first designee in 2014.  The award will (hopefully) be presented at the annual ACZM business meeting.  It will be awarded to no more than one Diplomate per year and will only be awarded in years when a Diplomate has been nominated by a member of the college and successfully approved by the ACZM Executive Committee.

To nominate a Diplomate for the Award submit a letter providing reasons for nomination, two additional letters of support from ACZM members, and the individual's CV.  All nomination materials should be sent electronically to the ACZM Secretary by August 1st, 2020.

The ACZM is soliciting nominations for its Student Manuscript Award. This award recognizes up to two outstanding papers published in the peer-reviewed scientific literature in calendar year 2019 that resulted from research conducted by a veterinarian engaged in a post-graduate training program (internship, residency, Master’s or PhD degree) at the time of manuscript submission. The award, in the form of a plaque and up to $1,000, will be announced and awarded at the American Association of Zoo Veterinarian’s annual banquet in Nashville, TN, September 24, 2020. Although preferred, nominees need not be present at the banquet to receive the award. Nominations are due to the Award Subcommittee chairperson, Kirsten Gilardi, DVM, DACZM (kvgilardi@ucdavis.edu) by August 1, 2020. Please feel free to contact Gilardi if you have questions.

Dr. Sedgwick (Washington State ’57), 86, a pioneer of zoological medicine, died May 26, 2018, in Monterey, California. After several years in private practice, he became Charter Zoo Veterinarian for the new Greater Los Angeles Zoo in 1964, at a time when there were fewer than 10 zoo veterinarians in the US. Using two experimental drugs and older techniques he moved all animals from the old Los Angeles Zoo to the new facility. In the process, anesthesiology became his main interest. In 1969, he became Research Veterinarian for the UCLA/NASA Biosatellite II program (monkeys in space).

The ACZM is saddened to announce the passing of Dr. Richard (Dick) Montali, a great friend and colleague to many in the profession. Dick was a significant contributor to the field of zoo and wildlife medicine for over 4 decades. He was one of eight Charter Diplomates of the ACZM, recognized for his contributions to the pathology of non-domestic species in the early years of our specialty. He helped shape and build a strong foundation for the College in its formative years.

Dr. Don Neiffer was recently awarded the Certificate in One Health following completion of a graduate level program, which focuses on networking international public health, veterinary, and environmental professionals with involvement or interest in global One Health activities. The program is administered by the College of Public Health and Health Professions of the University of Florida. Dr. Neiffer is currently enrolled in the Master of Health Science, One Health Concentration program offered by the Department of Environmental and Global Health. This graduate program differs from a traditional Master of Public Health degree, having an emphasis on occupational and zoonotic disease, multi-disciplinary problem solving, agriculture medicine, and occupational research.

Nearly 470 community members attended Friends of Sunset Zoo’s annual Wine in the Wild fundraiser at Manhattan’s Sunset Zoo Saturday evening. The event featured the unveiling of the James W. Carpenter Clinic, a newly renovated veterinary facility that supports the daily healthcare of the Zoo’s animal collection. Dr. Craig A. Harms is the 2011 recipient of the Stange Award for Meritorious Service in Veterinary Medicine. The award is presented annually and recognizes distinguished alumni for outstanding professional achievements. It is the highest honor given to alumni of Iowa State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. The award was presented during special ceremonies held by the university and the college on Oct. 21, 2011.

The ACZM Manuscript Award for the best zoological medicine manuscript by a veterinarian in a postdoctoral training program published in the preceding year was presented to Peter A. Black (St. Louis, MO), for his manuscript entitled Pharmacokinetics of Tramadol Hydrochloride and its Metabolite O-Desmethyltramadol in Peafowl (Pavo cristatus) published in the Journal of Zoo and Wildlife Medicine, 41(4): 2010: 671-676. AAZV recently established a database of people who would like to volunteer their services for the Gulf Oil Spill Disaster. The database contains additional information about each registrant that enables agencies involved in the cleanup to recruit people based on their needs. While the database focuses on people with some interest or expertise in wildlife, people who wish to register do not need to be members of the AAZV. They don’t need to be veterinarians, either, so they are encouraging biologists, zoologists, veterinary technicians, etc. to register.

The information contained in this database will be made available only to agencies that are involved in the clean up, and only when requested by them. AAZV will not use the database for any other purpose.

The Oklahoma State University’s (OSU) Center for Veterinary Health Sciences announced the 2009 OSU College of Veterinary Medicine Distinguished Alumni Award recipients today. With many highly qualified alumni nominated, the Alumni Association officers selected Drs. James W. Carpenter (’74), Anthony W. Confer (’72), Robert S. Hudson (’55) and Gary L. White (’68).

Carpenter is a Professor, Department of Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, Kansas State University, and is internationally recognized as a clinical and research veterinarian in exotic animal, wildlife, and zoo animal medicine. Dr. Jessup (WSU '76) earned a master's of preventive veterinary medicine from UC-Davis in 1984. He is the senior wildlife veterinarian for the Office of Spill Prevention and Response in the California Department of Fish and Game and has chaired the AVMA Committee on Environmental Issues. He was given the award for contributions in the development and growth of wildlife and conservation medicine.

The ACZM steering committee on veterinary curriculum held a workshop at White Oak Conservation Center on November 9-12, 2000. Representatives from all 31 AVMA accredited colleges of veterinary medicine in the United States and Canada joined members from 6 allied professional veterinary organizations to deliberate on recommendations to help veterinary educators effectively provide appropriate offerings in zoological medicine in veterinary curricula. Results of this effort were published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, Vol. 219, No. 11, Pages 1532-1535, 2001 as ACZM's recommendations on veterinary curricula and will facilitate the ongoing efforts of North American veterinary colleges to provide their students with knowledge and skills relative to zoological medicine believed necessary for them to succeed in their profession.
