Published on 10/12/2015

The American College of Zoological Medicine (ACZM) is pleased to announce that the recipient of the 2015 ACZM Student Manuscript Award is Dr. Michelle Verant, DVM, MPH, for her 2014 paper, “White-nose syndrome initiates a cascade of physiologic disturbances in the hibernating bat host,” published in BMC Physiology 14:10. The award was announced on October 1, 2015 at the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians’ annual meeting in Portland, Oregon.

This award recognizes an outstanding paper published in the peer-reviewed scientific literature in 2014 that resulted from research conducted by a veterinarian during his or her enrollment in a post-graduate training program. Dr. Verant conducted the research that resulted in this important scientific paper while pursuing a PhD in Comparative Biomedical Sciences at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. She was nominated by one of her mentors, Dr. David Blehert.

The ACZM Student Manuscript Award committee received 20 nominated papers for its 2015 award; each paper was judged according to its overall scientific merit, writing quality, and potential impact of the work in advancing the field of zoological medicine and the mission of the American College of Zoological Medicine, which is dedicated to furthering the health and welfare of individuals and populations of aquatic animals, zoological companion animals, and captive and free-ranging wild animals.
