Bios

 

Matt Allender, DVM, MS, DACZM received his DVM from the University of Illinois in 2004. In 2006 he completed a master’s thesis on health and disease of free-ranging reptiles through the University of Illinois. He completed a residency in zoological medicine at the University of Tennessee in 2009. After his residency he joined the faculty of the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, where he continues to work as a Visiting Instructor in the Department of Comparative Biosciences and a Co-director of the Aquatic portion of the Envirovet Summer Institute. He is currently working on a PhD regarding the epidemiology of ranavirus in chelonians.

Gretchen Cole, DVM, DACZM  received her DVM from Kansas State University in 2004. She then completed an avian and exotic animal medicine internship at Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists in Houston, Texas and a zoological medicine internship at Kansas State University. She completed a residency in zoological medicine at the University of Wisconsin/Milwaukee County Zoo in 2009. She has been an associate veterinarian at Indianapolis Zoo for the past 2 years and in December 2011 will be transitioning to Oklahoma City Zoo also as associate veterinarian.

Maya Kummrow, DMV, DVSc, DACZM received her DMV from the University of Zurich in Switzerland, with a doctoral thesis regarding feline coronavirus in 2005. She completed  a wildlife medicine and surgery internship at the Tufts University Wildlife Clinic in 2006. She then completed a residency in zoological medicine and pathology at Toronto Zoo/University of Guelph and received her DVSc in 2009. Since 2009 she has been the head veterinarian at Hannover Zoo in Germany.

David McLelland, BSc(Vet), BVSc, MACVSc(Zoo Medicine), DACZM received his BVSc from University of Sydney in 2001. This included a research year regarding encephalomyocarditis virus vaccination in zoo animals, which earned him a BSc. Upon graduation he worked in mixed-animal practice in Darwin and Sydney, then completed a DVSc residency in zoo medicine and pathology through the Toronto Zoo/University of Guelph in 2007. His doctoral thesis was regarding antibiotic pharmacokinetics in tammar wallabies. He worked with Wellington Zoo in New Zealand then Werribee Open Range Zoo in Melbourne before commencing his present position with Zoos South Australia in Adelaide in 2008. He obtained membership in the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in Zoo Medicine in 2008.

Debra (Debbie) Myers, DVM, DACZM received her DVM from Iowa State University in 2004. She completed a small internship in 2005, a zoological medicine internship at Louisiana State University in 2006, a zoological medicine residency at University of Florida in 2009, and a clinical instructorship at Disney Animal Kingdom in 2010. She is currently the associate veterinarian at the Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Center for Elephant Conservation in Polk City, Florida. Her research interests include clinical pathology and pharmacokinetics.

Javier Nevarez, DVM, PhD, DACZM received his DVM from Louisiana State University in 2001. He completed an internship in zoological medicine at LSU in 2002. He completed a PhD in 2007 at LSU with his thesis regarding West Nile virus and lymphocytic proliferative syndrome of American alligators. He has been a consulting veterinarian for the Louisiana alligator industry since 2003, is currently serving as an assistant professor of zoological medicine in the Veterinary Clinical Sciences department of the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine, and is director of the Wildlife Hospital of Louisiana, also based at LSU SVM.

Karen Wolf, MS, DVM, DACZM received her MS from the University of Maryland with her thesis being focused on the reproductive physiology of the black-footed ferret. She received her DVM from Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in 2003. She completed an internship in zoological medicine at Kansas State University in 2005, followed by a zoological medicine residency at North Carolina State University in 2008. She is currently the Head Veterinarian at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium in Tacoma, Washington.
